• Born in the Santhal tribal community in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district, Murmu began her political career as a councillor in Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat in 1997.

• Later in the same year, she became the vice-chairperson of the Rairangpur NAC.

• Before this, she also holds the record of being the first tribal woman Governor in the country.

• She is also the first major Presidential candidate from Odisha and once elected, she will become the first President of the country from the state of Odisha.

• Murmu will become the first tribal President of India and the second-ever female President, after UPA-backed Pratibha Patil (2007-12), if she is elected to the country's highest constitutional post.

• Draupadi Murmu was the Governor of Jharkhand for more than 6 years

• After the completion of her tenure, she left the Jharkhand Raj Bhavan and went to her village in Odisha's Rairangpur on July 12, 2021, and has been living there since then.

• Murmu had served twice as an MLA and once as a minister in Odisha, before being sworn in as the Governor of Jharkhand on May 18, 2015.

• Murmu's five-year term as governor of Jharkhand was scheduled to end on May 18, 2020, but it was automatically extended due to the non appointment of a new Governor in wake of the ongoing Covid pandemic.

• Murmu, during her tenure, herself organised Lok Adalats on issues related to higher education in the state, in which about 5,000 cases of university teachers and employees were settled.

• To centralise the enrolment process in the universities and colleges of the state, she created the Chancellor's portal.

• Murmu was awarded the

Nilkanth Award for the Best MLA of the year in 2007 by the Odisha Legislative assembly.

• Murmu was married to Shyam Charan Murmu and the couple had two sons and a daughter.

• However, her life has been marked with personal tragedies as she lost her husband and two sons.

• Murmu's daughter Itishree is married to Ganesh Hembram.
